10th February 2025National Apprenticeship Week – A Day in the life of Thomas Hemmings

I usually arrive at the office at around half 8, HW fisher utilise a flexible hours approach, so I prefer to get in a little earlier. However, this is super dependent on SWR being reliable!

Upon arriving at the office, I typically start by grabbing a drink and checking my emails to ensure there are no urgent matters. I’ll then go through the messages, responding to any clients as a priority.

I create a prioritized to-do list for the day. I always keep a spreadsheet open with my current tasks, which helps me stay organized and monitor my progress by crossing off completed items.

I will then begin working through my tasks, my current workload is very tax orientated due to the time of year as January is the deadline for tax returns to be filed. This means that I need to keep track of the progress of my clients returns to ensure that they are all filed prior to the deadline.

At lunchtime, I take a short 5K run around Regent’s Park, which is conveniently located near the office. I am currently training for a marathon so it’s a nice way to get some extra running in! I find it is also It’s a nice way to recharge and get a boost before diving back into work.

After my run, I update my work-in-progress sheet, noting any responses or progress on tasks I’ve been working on. It is very important I keep on top of this, as clients will email throughout the day.

I’ll then continue tackling these tasks or check in with managers to see if there’s anything else I can help with.

If I am struggling with a certain task, there is a strong group of other trainees who I am able to liaise with. This is especially helpful when it comes to exams, as they have all sat the exams that I have coming up, so they are able to guide me and give strong advice.

Before logging off for the day, I review my to-do list, cross off anything that’s been completed, and move any unfinished tasks to the following day’s list. This helps ensure that I am ready to hit the ground the running the following day.
