2023 marks the 90th year since HW Fisher’s foundation. I am so proud of where we are today with the knowledge that our future is shaped by our past, our values, and our people. Please join me in celebrating our history and the people that underpin us.
Reaching 90 years in business is a testament to the collaborative environment that we have built, and our exceptionally talented team. I look forward to the coming years, where we will continue to build a stronger and brighter future together.
Who was HW Fisher?
Our founder, Harold Wolf Fisher trained as a chartered accountant, and then spent the next six years in Venezuela and Trinidad as an internal auditor for Shell. Returning to Britain, in the middle of the depression, he struggled to find a suitable job. Harold boldly chose to begin his own venture when he founded HW Fisher, in 1933.
As you can imagine, the firm had barely started when world events took over. Harold’s mother had Jewish friends and family in Berlin, and over the following years, he helped many families flee Germany and find safety. Many of those he helped went on to become clients of his firm, and some of their families remain HW Fisher clients today.
Our more recent history
In 2018, HW Fisher underwent a significant milestone with a management buyout (MBO), involving seven of our partners, led by myself and our Senior Partner Russell Nathan. This was a watershed moment for the firm. Several of our partners retired at the time and I along with my management team set about re-defining and modernising the organisation, including refreshing our brand and refining our values.
Over the last 5 years, we have scaled our team and grown our offering. I believe that the wider leadership team have played a major part in that by ensuring we lead with our values to create a culture that we are proud of. I believe it’s vitally important to demonstrate good judgement and listen carefully to the partners and our people. It’s what I love most about my role at HW Fisher, to use my own experience to provide support, sponsor, and advocate for every person within the organisation.
Today and tomorrow
Talent has been the key to our success since 1933, and it will continue to be so. As you know, alongside training opportunities for current employees, we run an established apprenticeship scheme for school leavers, and graduate schemes, which offer full support with on-the-job training and academic study support towards their ACA, CTA, and ACCA qualifications. This allows us to support the future leaders of our firm.
We are also committed to promoting equality and diversity, both as an employer and as a service provider. We are a proud long standing partner of WealthiHer, a network of firms and businesses who help advocate for and champion female entrepreneurs, investors and clients to drive the economic advancement and empowerment of women worldwide. Our continued focus on making the firm an equal workplace will benefit the firm immeasurably.
I believe that the key to continuing the success of our firm depends on our people. Human talent will only make our firm stronger and better at what we do.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey so far, cheers to the next 90.
